Mixed conditional 1: Grammar: Conditionals with Georgie

Hi, I'm Georgie from BBC Learning English and

maybe you've heard of conditionals -

talvez você já tenha ouvido falar das condicionais —

the zero, the first, the second, the third.

a zero, a primeira, a segunda, a terceira.

But did you know that you can mix them up to have new meanings?

Mas você sabia que dá para misturá-las e criar novos sentidos?

Let's take a look.

Vamos dar uma olhada.

Now, we could say that our lives now are a result

Bom, dá para dizer que a nossa vida hoje é resultado

of a chain of events that happened in the past.

de uma cadeia de acontecimentos que se deram no passado.

I live in London now because I applied for a job in the past.

Eu moro em Londres hoje porque me candidatei a uma vaga no passado.

Neil has another example of this.

O Neil tem outro exemplo disso.

I am so tired.

Estou tão cansado.

I hardly slept last night.

Quase não dormi ontem à noite.

If I'd slept properly, I wouldn't be so tired now.

Se eu tivesse dormido direito, não estaria tão cansado agora.

So, Neil is tired now. Why?

Então, o Neil está cansado agora. Por quê?

Because he didn't sleep well in the past.

Porque ele não dormiu bem no passado.

Now, this is a type of mixed conditional.

You might recognise the third conditional structure in the first part

Você talvez reconheça a estrutura da terceira condicional na primeira parte

and the second conditional structure in the second part,

e a estrutura da segunda condicional na segunda parte,

but we'll come back to the structure later.

For now, you just need to know that this type of mixed conditional is

for expressing how your life now is affected by something that happened

in the past.

If I hadn't got this job, I would probably still be in Korea.

Does he live there now?

No, he lives in London, working for the BBC.

Again, he's imagining how a past event influenced his present reality.

De novo, ele imagina como um acontecimento passado influenciou sua realidade atual.

He got the job in the past,

Ele conseguiu o emprego no passado,

so now he lives in London, not Korea.

Let's hear from Pippa.

because she doesn't have to come into the office every day.

Something in the past is affecting her life now.

If I hadn't learnt Spanish when I was younger,

OK, now you know when to use it.

But how do you use it?

The structure is the past perfect in the 'if' clause and 'would'

plus a base verb in the main or result clause. To recap,

this mixed conditional is about how past events are affecting your life now.
