A question tag is a short question at the end of a statement.

Uma question tag é uma pergunta curta no fim de uma afirmação.

You like pizza, don't you?

In this example, the question tag is 'don't you?'.

Neste exemplo, a question tag é 'don't you?'.

Marta is almost certain Kevin likes pizza,

Marta está quase certa que Kevin gosta de pizza,

but she wants to be sure!

mas ela quer ter certeza!

Now watch the same example,

Agora assista o mesmo exemplo,

but listen to how Marta says the question tag.

mas escute como Marta diz a question tag.

I just ordered pizza. You like pizza, don't you?

Question tags are said with rising intonation...

Question tags são ditas com entonação ascendente...

...don't you?

or falling intonation.

ou entonação descendente.

...don't you?

We use rising intonation if we think we know the answer,

Usamos entonação ascendente se achamos que sabemos a resposta,

but want to check just in case.

mas queremos confirmar por garantia.

Falling intonation is used when we are very certain that we are correct.

Entonação descendente é usada quando estamos muito certos de que estamos corretos.

But, in this case Marta was wrong, unfortunately!

In the examples you saw, the first half of the sentence is positive

Nos exemplos que você viu, a primeira metade da frase é positiva

and the question tag is negative.

e a question tag é negativa.

We can also switch it around.

Também podemos inverter.

Falling intonation has the same meaning.

Entonação descendente tem o mesmo significado.

I'm certain that I'm right.

Tenho certeza que estou certa.

But with rising intonation I'm not sure about the answer.

Mas com entonação ascendente eu não tenho certeza da resposta.
